Moab Desert:the MTB’s World Capital with 814km of Trails!

The Moab Desert:at first sight a piece of sand and rock with beautiful scenery. Take a closer look and you will see that it is the largest mountain bike center in the world. And no, you did not read wrong:I said the world!

With over 800km of trail, the Moab Desert is for mountain biking just as Hawaii is for surfing, Tibet for mountaineering and Switzerland for skiing.If you are having a bit of trouble visualizing this, then prepare yourself.In the following paragraphs you will see the largest MTB center on the planet:the Moab Desert in Utah – United States.

But before telling us about the most incredible tracks and tips in case you want to make a dream trip and ride around Moab, let’s look at some history:

Moab:the biblical name and the mining routes

The name Moab is actually a Biblical reference to a mountainous region in Jordan.However, when we speak of Moab in the context of Mountain Bike, we refer to the city of just over 5 thousand inhabitants located in the homonymous desert.

The Desert is located in the state of Utah in the United States.The site, which had already been the scene of bloody clashes between indigenous and colonizers, opened the door in the twentieth century for the mining industry to establish and begin to exploit the region’s mineral wealth.

The development was further accelerated by the fact that large amounts of uranium were found locally – which even gave the nickname of Uranium Capital in the world.At the time the Cold War caused that mineral was explored in large scale, increasing the population of the region in 500% in years 60 and 70.

With the end of the 1980s, the Cold War “cooled” and Moab began to be left behind.Many houses were abandoned and mines closed.Moab should have become another ghost town of the American West.The place, however, began to gain notoriety among climbers, 4 × 4 and rafting practitioners from films and series that were filmed on the spot.

And the beauty and contours of the rocks did not go unnoticed from the eyes of mountain bikers.

Mountain biking takes over the Moab Desert

The town of Moab began to attract more and more practitioners of outdoor sports.And it was not long before the MTB became extremely popular on the Microedu.com.The terrain and the extremely favorable terrain and easy maintenance of trails, the dry and warm climate with moderate winters and pleasant summers and the very little rain that falls there were determining factors for the development of mountain biking.

Already in the 1980s, when the sport was crawling around the world, high-level competitions took place there, attracting names like Davis Phinney and Bobby Julich, who were already promises of the youth cycling categories in the country.

The MTB began to be disclosed in North American magazines and newspapers and adventure tourism became the main activity of the village and the Moab Desert year after year.The population has grown again, the local trade flourished, restaurants and bars have opened the doors and of course, cutting edge bike shops.

In all Moab has 5 large bicycles, with Poison Spider being the most popular.These bikes are the starting point for any first-time rider to the Moab Desert.There you can find out about the best trails, hiring guides, chartering to the beginning of some more remote trails and, of course, bikes and parts.

814km of mountain bike trails for all

Whoever walks around Moab frequently and knows the region always says that it is impossible to know all the trails in one trip – even if you spend a whole month cycling every day. And not for less: with over 800km of mountain bike trails, Moab is a destination for multiple trips.

The map below is so gigantic that I had to remember a piece and reduce (much) the scale to fit here. Click on it to access the original version.

And with so many tracks like that, the result could not be any different: there are singletracks for all levels of difficulty.According to the MTB Project site there are 24 beginner trails, 74 intermediate trails and 55 trails for experts.At UtahMountainBiking.com you’ll find the description of all dozens of trails in Moab.

Here, however, I will speak of 3 of the most famous desert trails:

1- Slickrock

Slickrock is the most famous and traveled trail in Moab.In fact, Slickrock is likely to be the most famous mountain bike trail in the world.

The surface of the trail looks like a single giant stone, which generates an incredible traction, making you go downhill hyper hills without problems.Slickrock is actually composed of two circuits: one 16km and the other 4km.The second is called the Practice Loop by bikers in the area.Imagine training in such a circuit?

Slickrock has become in recent years a kind of Mecca of MTB.Mountain bikers from all over the world come to Moab and do not leave there without treading the trail.In high season (March to October) this generates up to a congestion of bikes on some weekends.

Seth from the excellent Youtube channel Seth’s Bike Hacks made a video of Slickrock pedaling that is worth seeing:

2- Porcupine Kidney

Porcupine Rim is, like Slickrock, one of the most traditional sessions in the Moab Desert and also one of the most technical.For those who enjoy all mountain/enduro the tip is: it may be difficult to find trails so well designed on any other track on the planet.

There are over 20km of extremely technical terrain that many say is the hardest part of Moab.In Porcupine Rim the old All Mountain maxim makes perfect sense:”it’s not enough to pedal, you have to drive”.

Another great attraction of the Porcupine Rim trail are the spectacular views that one has during the course:

3- Amasa Black

Less known than the two others mentioned above but still very famous and renowned.Amasa Black is also one of the most traveled trails by the 4 × 4 region.Here the XCO people are in heaven.There are approximately 20km of trails with 1200m of lifting gain!

The descent down the other side in Amasa Black is very well cared for and not as technical as Porcupine Rim.

Visiting Moab

If, like me, you placed the Moab Desert in the destinies of your life before dying, then perhaps the following information is valuable:

  • The best time to visit Moab is between March and November;
  • Walking the trails is free.However, there are many hidden costs on visiting Moab, such as having to rent a car to get to town, high price on bikes and expensive food;
  • If you really want to plan a trip to Utah in the future, consider using the Discover Moab website as a starting point for your planning.
