Stand Spring 2010
About a year ago, Nokia’s Ovi store was not necessarily the shining example in terms of App stores , time we once again check the state of things. This time, as a point of access to the Ovi store, I use a Nokia 5230, which the company Cyberport in person of Sven kindly offered for a test. On the smartphone itself, however, there is again a future, separate report. The start to the app store of Nokia was initially somewhat bumpy, after the first call of the application for this, I had to first download an update.
To install this, I had to first select the access points and confirm that I really want to the Internet. After five minutes, I once again ventured into the new Ovi Store. Also here I had completely after Symbian-Unart again the access point, ie the APN select and then confirm that really an Internet connection should be built. The homepage of the Ovi store laughed at me afterwards in a seemingly almost unchanged design.
The selection of the upper terms (Applications, Games, Audio & Video, Personalization and Recommended) is done by means of a tab variant, including a search bar to search for specific apps by means of slogans. As is generally the case with app stores, a download or purchase is only made after the registration and the login. Surprisingly-I would like to log in with my old access data does not somehow-very strange. The number of apps has already risen significantly compared to the last run in the Ovi store, but not to the extent that one could be impressed. Here I do not understand Nokia, there are so many Symbian apps. Why then does not a really convincing offer exist, that includes, for example, all executable Symbian applications from external developers, so as to provide more mass and class?
I have simply searched at Sacramentomart for some apps, which I use regularly both on Android and on the iPhone: Fehlanzeige! In addition, annoying in the Ovi store also calls new pages, here the download takes itself with an active HSDPA connection a felt eternity – with my iPhone and an EDGE connection, I was faster in the comparison test on the next page. This is astonishing, because after all, purely technical, HSDPA is a factor of 15 faster than EDGE.The bottle neck is thus proven in the smartphone. The operation of the store itself with the touch screen of the Nokia 5230 hakelt, is certainly justified with Symbian and the pure hardware, here one can not load the store itself.
On the other hand, I find the possibility to use the Ovi-Store also via browser in the PC or notebook. Here, after a heartbeat, the (quantitatively) limited extent can be searched and searched without a separate program-such as iTunes-would have to be called. In this case, the applications are loaded locally on the computer and then installed on the smartphone via Nokia PC Suite.
What is the conclusion?
The previous progress of the Ovi store of Nokia, I deliberately not compare with Apple’s App Store-it would be fair to say that Nokia would just lose. Therefore, it is a good idea to compare the Ovi stores on an equal footing. Let’s just take a small app store like the one from Palm for the Pre. This started clearly after the Ovi-Store and offers system-less much content, since the penetration of the Palm Pre in the market is manageable. The concept of the Palm is much more sophisticated-also it felt here a visible progress in terms of App figures, not to mention the quality of the apps. Why does Nokia not put its prestige and flagship project on its feet? Instead, with services such as “Ovi Maps” or “Comes with Music”, users are trying to pull an outdated platform to achieve comparatively satisfying sales figures until the new Symbian platform appears. That an App-Store is the A and O for the resounding success of a smartphone, is known at least since the iPhone.
