History of Albany, Indiana
Albany, Indiana, is a small city located in Delaware County in the northeastern part of the state. It is a part of the Muncie metropolitan area and has a population of 1,874. The city was founded in 1837 by Elijah Backus and was originally known as Backusburg. The name was changed to Albany in 1845 when it became a post office.
The area around Albany was first inhabited by Native Americans, including members of the Miami, Delaware, Shawnee and Potawatomi tribes. In 1818 the Treaty of St. Mary’s opened up this region for settlement by white settlers and soon more people began to arrive and settle in the area.
In 1837 Elijah Backus founded the town that would eventually become Albany on land he had purchased from two local Native Americans for $600. He named it Backusburg after himself but five years later it was renamed Albany after his home town in New York State.
The town grew slowly with most development taking place along Main Street where stores were built as well as churches and other businesses providing services to the community. A railroad line came through in 1854 which helped to stimulate growth further still as it made transportation easier for both people and goods into and out of town.
During the Civil War many men from Albany joined up with Union forces while others remained at home working on farms or in businesses that provided goods to those fighting overseas. After the war ended many veterans returned to Albany or settled there permanently bringing new ideas with them which helped shape the culture of the city going forward.
