The current Sultan and Head of State is:
“His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam”. He is the 29th sultan in the royal family, established by Sultan Muhammad in 1405 AD. ruled.

The state consists of 4 districts:
Temburong is the easternmost district, which is separated from the remaining three districts by a Malay Limbang corridor.
Belait is the district with the rich oil and natural gas deposits, the basis of the country’s wealth.
Tutong with an area of 1,166 km².
Brunei-Muara is the smallest district with an area of 570 km².
Brunei sees itself as an independent sultanate that is governed on the basis of a written constitution. Since the independence of the state, the sultan has held the office of head of state and the office of prime minister.
