Laos: Political System

According to EQUZHOU.NET, Laos is a democratic people’s republic, in which only one communist party, the Laotian revolutionary people’s party LRVO, is allowed. See AbbreviationFinder for more information about Laos politics, and acronyms as well.

At the head of the state is the president. The president is the party leader of the LRKVO. He is appointed by the party. The parliament, the national assembly, is a unicameral system. It has 109 seats. It is elected every 5 years.

The voting age is 18 years.

National anthem

Based on flag descriptions by Countryaah.com, Pheng Xat Lao has been the national anthem of Laos since 1947. The composer of the national anthem was Thongdy Sounthonevichit (1905-1968). The text was replaced in 1975 after the people’s democratic republic was proclaimed. The new text is from Sisana Sisane.

States

Laos is divided into the following 16 provinces, a special zone and a prefecture:

  • Attapu with an area of approx. 10,320 km2 and approx. 115,000 residents is located in the south.
  • Bokeo with an area of approx. 6,196 km2 and approx. 150,000 residents is located in the northwest.
  • Bolikhamxai with an area of approx. 18,863 km2 and approx. 215,000 residents is located in the center of the country.
  • Champasak with an area of approx. 15,415 km2 and approx. 575,000 residents is located on the border with Thailand.
  • Houaphan with an area of approx. 16,500 km2 and approx. 323,000 residents.
  • Khammouan with an area of approx. 16,315 km2 and approx. 359,000 residents is located in the south.
  • Louangnamtha with an area of approx. 9,325 km2 and approx. 150,000 residents is located in the north.
  • Louangphrabang with an area of approx. 18,875 km2 and approx. 410,000 residents is located in the north.
  • Oudomxai with an area of approx. 15,370 km2 and approx. 275,000 residents is located in the north.
  • Phongsali with an area of approx. 16,270 km2 and approx. 200,000 residents is located in the north.
  • Salavan with an area of approx. 10,961 km2 and approx. 337,000 residents is located in the south.
  • Savannakhet with an area of approx. 21,774 km2 and approx. 722,000 residents is located in the south.
  • Vientien Province with an area of approx. 15,927 km2 and approx. 374,000 residents.
  • Xaignabouli with an area of approx. 16,389 km2 and approx. 382,000 residents is located in the north-west.
  • Xekong with an area of approx. 10,320 km2 and approx. 84,000 residents is located in the southeast.
  • Xiangkhoang with an area of approx. 15,880 km2 and approx. 262,000 residents is located in the north-east.
  • Viangchan (Vientiane), the Vientiane Prefecture with an area of approx. 3,920 km2 and approx. 693,000 residents is located in the northwest. The prefecture emerged in 1989 from parts of the Vientian Province. The capital lies within the prefecture.
  • Xaisomboun is a special zone with an area of approx. 7,105 km2 and approx. 71,000 residents located in the north. It originated in 1994 from parts of Vientian and Xiangkhoang Province.

Writer and poet

  • Sisana Sisane (1922-1999)He composed the text of the national anthem of Laos.
  • Outhine BounyavongThe contemporary writer died in January 2000. He wrote the book “Mothers beloved – Stories from Laos”, which was published in both English and Lao.
  • Chanthi Deuansavanh (born 1940)writer. In 1999 he won the South East Asia Award, which is comparable to the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. He lived in hiding in the jungle among the rebels of the Patriotic Front for about 15 years.
