Nature
Eastern Maine is a lowland area and is generally less than 200 meters above sea level. The area has a fjord and archipelago coast, which testifies to past icing and land elevation.

History
The first permanent European settlements were founded in the 1620s. In 1677, the entire area was purchased by the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Maine later became a district within Massachusetts. In connection with the so-called Missouri Compromise 1820, Maine became its own state. Agriculture, fishing and shipbuilding as well as the timber and paper industries were important industries early on, and in the 19th century the textile industry was added. During the 20th century, Maine often had financial problems. Politically, Republicans have dominated from the Civil War until the mid-1950s, but then they and Democrats have been strong.
