Macau: Political System

The Macau form of government has limited democratic elements. According to the motto “one country has two systems”, the country enjoys relative freedom of movement towards China. Only defense and foreign policy are centrally determined by China, in accordance with the Basic Law of 1993.

According to topschoolsintheusa, Macau has been a Special Administrative Region of the Republic of China since it was handed over to China on December 20, 1999.

The head of government (“Chief Executive”) of the Special Administrative Region is elected for a term of five years, with one opportunity for re-election. It is elected by an electoral body of 200 to 300 members. The committee is composed of representatives from business, employee representatives and cultural workers.

The Chinese central government then appoints the head of government.

In turn, he appoints the members of the Executive Council, the Cabinet, which consists of five ministers, two members of parliament and three influential citizens.

The Legislative Council, the parliament, which can only decide on budgetary issues, consists of 23 members.

The voting age is 18 years.

The legal system is still based on the Portuguese system today.

The official name of the country is:

Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China

“March of the Volunteers”Stands up!

No longer slaves!

The great wall rebuilt

from our flesh and blood.

China’s people in great distress.

The last cry of the suppressed:

Stand up! Rise!

With a thousand bodies, one heart in spite of the enemy cannons:

Forward! Forward! Ahead!
