State University of Campinas or (UNICAMP) was officially founded on October 5, 1966, the day of laying its foundation stone. Considered by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Brazil as the best public university in the country.
History
In 1960, the state of São Paulo was already responsible for 40% of the country’s industrial capacity, and 24% of its population was economically active. From this scenario, the Implementation Project of the State University of Campinas arose. It was built in response to the demand for qualified personnel in the region. Officially established on October 5, 1966. Although it is considered a young institution, Unicamp has already developed a strong tradition in education, research and services to society. The campus is named after its founder, Zeferino Vaz, who conceived it and saw it founded on the date of its official constitution.
Before being implemented, the State University of Campinas attracted more than 200 foreign professors and 180 professors from large Brazilian universities. Currently, with three campuses – in Campinas, Limeira and Piracicaba -, the university has 22 teaching and research units. It has a health complex (with two hospital units in Campinas), 23 nuclei and interdisciplinary centers, two technical colleges and a series of support units where various research projects are developed. It offers a diversified set of undergraduate courses in the areas of exact, technological, biomedical sciences, humanities and arts. However, it is also recognized for its postgraduate courses that have the highest rate of enrolled students of all Brazilian universities.
Approximately, the student body of the State University of Campinas is responsible for 12% of the master’s and doctoral theses that are currently being developed in the country. For this reason, the institution has attracted a group of high-tech industries to its surroundings. On the Campinas campus there is a cultural space, the Casa do Lago, which has a movie theater with 72 seats, a multipurpose room for various activities and a gallery with a room for musical performances. The Casa do Lago frequently hosts orchestras, choirs, visual arts exhibitions, dance workshops, concerts, plays, films, workshops and presentations. The Casa do Lago is linked to the Pro-Rectorate for Outreach and Community Affairs. The cultural space occupies a building inaugurated in 1994, and the university extension activities unite Unicamp with society.
Organization
Initially its origins were in 1962and installed in 1966, UNICAMP had as its initial mission to promote science and technology in the industrial pole in the province of the state of São Paulo. Unicamp has strong undergraduate and postgraduate programs that cover a wide range of areas of science, technology, health, the humanities and the arts. Its main campus is located in the neighborhood of Barão Geraldo, 10 km from the center of Campinas, with additional campuses in Limeira and Piracicaba. One characteristic of UNICAMP is that it has avoided the Brazilian tradition of creating universities through the simple juxtaposition of careers and units. UNICAMP has three campuses – in Campinas, Piracicaba and Limeira – and comprises 21 teaching and research units. It also has a vast complex of hospitals (with two large hospital units in Campinas and another in Sumaré), in addition to 23 interdisciplinary nuclei and centers, two technical colleges and a series of support units in a universe in which around 50 thousand people and thousands of research projects are developed. Unicamp operates in four campuses located in three cities: the main campus in Campinas, with eighteen schools and colleges; the School of Dentistry of Piracicaba; and the School of Applied Sciences and the School of Technology in Limeira.
