According to top-mba-universities, Graham County, Arizona is located in the southeastern corner of the state and was established on March 10, 1881. It is named after James Graham, a former US Army officer and early settler in the area. The county covers an area of 4,641 square miles and has a population of 37,220 according to the 2010 census. Graham County was originally home to several Native American tribes such as the Apache, Navajo, Hopi and Pima. The first non-Native American settlers arrived in the area during the late 1800s and came primarily from Texas. These settlers were cattle ranchers who brought large herds of cattle with them and began to establish ranches throughout Graham County. The county experienced rapid growth during the early 1900s when copper mining became a major industry in Arizona. Several mining towns were established throughout Graham County including Clifton-Morenci, Safford, Solomonville and Thatcher. These towns attracted miners from all over the world who came to work in the mines or support businesses related to mining operations such as restaurants, saloons and hotels. Agriculture also flourished during this time period as farmers cultivated corn, wheat, cotton and other crops throughout Graham County. Cattle ranching also continued to be an important part of life for many residents with numerous ranches still operating today that have been passed down through generations of families living in Graham County for decades. SUSD serves the communities of Safford, Thatcher, Eden, Pima, and Solomon. TUSD serves the communities of Thatcher, Pima and Solomon. DUSD serves the community of Duncan. All three districts are part of the Arizona Department of Education’s Eastern Region. The Safford Unified School District is made up of 11 schools including eight elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and one alternative learning center. The district provides a variety of educational opportunities for its students including advanced placement courses in math and science as well as career and technical education programs in areas such as automotive technology and culinary arts. The district also offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as sports teams, band programs and student clubs. The Thatcher Unified School District is made up of seven schools including five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. This district also provides a wide range of educational opportunities for its students including advanced placement courses in math and science as well as career and technical education programs in areas such as health sciences and agriculture. The district offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as sports teams, band programs, theater productions, student clubs and more. The Duncan Unified School District consists of two schools – an elementary school and a high school – both located in the town of Duncan. This small district provides a quality education for its students with an emphasis on college preparation through rigorous coursework along with career exploration options through elective classes in fields like business management or engineering design technology. Extracurricular activities are also available to students at this smaller district with sports teams competing at both the varsity level as well as club level competitions throughout Arizona.
