According to watchtutorials, Azerbaijan has a population of 10,143,000 people as of 2019. The country is home to a diverse population with over 90 ethnicities represented. The majority of the population is Azerbaijani which makes up approximately 86% of the total population. Other significant ethnic groups include Lezgins (6%), Russians (2%), and Armenians (2%). There are also smaller populations of Talysh, Avars, Udins, Tsakhurs and other ethnicities making up the remaining 4%. The median age in Azerbaijan is 32.3 years old with a life expectancy at birth of 72 years for males and 78 years for females. The literacy rate in Azerbaijan is nearly 100%, with 98% for men and 99% for women. This high rate can be attributed to the government’s commitment to education which has seen education become compulsory for children aged 6-15 since 2008. The official language in Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani, however Russian and Armenian are commonly used as well. English is also widely spoken by younger generations who often learn it in school or through private tutoring classes. Religion plays an important role in Azerbaijani culture with roughly 93% identifying as Muslim while 2% identify as Christian and 5% identify as irreligious or atheist.
