The population is predominantly Belarusian (84%), with minority populations of Russians (8%), Poles (3%), Ukrainians (2%) and others (3%). The majority of the population lives in the cities and towns of Minsk, Grodno, Brest, Mogilev and Vitebsk. The capital city of Belarus is Minsk which has a population of 1.9 million people. It is home to many major industries such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and electronics. The city also has a large number of universities and colleges as well as numerous cultural attractions including theaters, museums and galleries. The national language spoken in Belarus is Belarussian which belongs to the East Slavic group of languages. Most people also speak Russian due to its close proximity to Russia and it being the official language for many institutions including government organizations and universities. Other languages spoken include Ukrainian, Polish, Lithuanian and Latvian depending on geographical location within the country. Belarus has one of the highest life expectancies in Europe with an average lifespan reaching 73 years for men and 79 years for women according to World Bank Data from 2019. This can be attributed to several factors such as access to healthcare services as well as high levels of education among the population which helps them lead healthier lifestyles overall.
