It has a population of approximately 17 million people, making it one of the most densely populated countries in Latin America. The majority of Chile’s population is made up of Mestizos and Whites, who together constitute around 80% of the population. The remaining 20% is composed of Indigenous peoples, Afro-Chileans, and other ethnicities. The largest cities in Chile are Santiago (the capital), Concepción and Valparaíso. Santiago is home to more than half of Chile’s population, with over 8 million people residing there. This city is known for its vibrant culture, historic architecture and numerous universities. Concepción and Valparaíso are both major port cities that attract many visitors from around the world each year. The official language spoken in Chile is Spanish, but there are also a number of other languages spoken by various ethnic groups throughout the country. These include Mapudungun (spoken by Indigenous Mapuche people), Quechua (spoken by Indigenous Aymara people) and Rapa Nui (spoken by Indigenous Rapa Nui people). English is also widely spoken as a result of its popularity among foreign tourists who visit Chile every year. Overall, Chile has a diverse population which contributes to its unique culture and way of life.
