According to top-mba-universities, New Castle County, Delaware is the northernmost county in the state and is home to the city of Wilmington. The area has a long history, with evidence of Native American settlements dating back to 8500 BCE. The earliest recorded settlers were Dutch, who arrived in 1631 and established Fort Casimir near what is now New Castle. The fort was captured by the Swedes in 1655 and renamed Fort Trinity. In 1664, England took control of the region, which was then named New Castle County after William Penn’s family castle in Wales. New Castle quickly became one of the most prosperous counties in America due to its thriving shipbuilding industry and its position as an important port city. By 1776, Wilmington was one of the largest cities in America and served as a major hub for manufacturing and trade. During this period, New Castle County also became a popular destination for immigrants from Europe seeking economic opportunity in America. The Battle of Cooch’s Bridge was fought here on September 3rd between Washington’s troops and British troops under General Howe’s command. This battle marked the only time during the Revolutionary War that Washington personally commanded troops on a battlefield. After independence from England was won, New Castle County continued to be an important port city for trade and commerce until it began to decline as other cities such as Baltimore grew larger and more powerful during the 19th century. Today, however, New Castle County has seen a resurgence as it is now home to numerous businesses ranging from financial services companies to manufacturing plants.
