The majority of the population is located in urban areas with over 70% of the total population living in cities and towns. With a population density of 514 people per square kilometer, Dominican Republic has one of the highest population densities in Latin America. The ethnic composition of Dominican Republic consists mainly of mixed race (71%), black (16%) and white (13%) individuals. Spanish is the official language spoken by most Dominicans while some also speak English or French Creole. Catholicism is the main religion practiced by most Dominicans with around 95% identifying as Roman Catholic while Protestantism and other religions make up for 5%. There are also a number of smaller indigenous groups who practice their own traditional religions and languages in certain parts of Dominican Republic. The literacy rate among adults aged 15 years and above stands at 92%, which is higher than the Latin American average. Education up to secondary level is free and compulsory for children aged 6-14 years old. The life expectancy at birth stands at 75 years for both men and women which shows a slight improvement from previous years due to improved healthcare facilities and access to better medications.
