According to watchtutorials, East Timor is a small nation located in Southeast Asia comprised of two main islands, the larger Timor and the smaller Atauro Island. It has a population of approximately 1.3 million people as of 2020, making it one of the least populated countries in the world. The majority of East Timor’s population is made up of Austronesian-speaking people, while other ethnicities include Chinese, Portuguese and Indian. The official language is Tetum and Portuguese is also widely spoken. The majority of East Timorese are Roman Catholic and Christianity remains the predominant religion in East Timor. Other religions practiced include Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. There are also indigenous animistic beliefs that are still practiced by some communities. Education levels in East Timor vary greatly due to poverty levels, but primary education is free and compulsory for all children under 18 years old. The literacy rate for adults over 15 is estimated at about 58%. Life expectancy at birth for East Timorese citizens currently stands at 65 years old for men and 68 years old for women.
