The median age in France is 42 years old and life expectancy is 82 years for women and 78 for men. This is slightly higher than the global average. French citizens enjoy a high standard of living with a GDP per capita at around $40,000 USD per year. Education is highly valued in France; public schooling is free up to university level and literacy rates are very high at around 99%. The official language of France is French; however there are many regional languages still spoken across the country such as Basque, Occitan, Breton and Catalan. Religion also plays an important role in French society; approximately 65% of the population identify as Roman Catholic while about 6% identify as Muslim.
