India is a diverse country, with many different religions, languages and cultures. The population of India is composed of various ethnic groups including Aryans, Dravidians, Mongols, Tibetans and various other tribes. The majority of the population is Hindu (79%), followed by Muslims (14%), Christians (2.3%) and other religious minorities such as Sikhs and Buddhists. The official language of India is Hindi although there are 22 other recognized languages spoken throughout the country. India’s population has seen rapid growth over the last few decades due to improved healthcare services and declining death rates. As a result, India’s population is projected to surpass China’s by 2024 to become the world’s most populous nation. The median age in India currently stands at 27 years old, with more than half of its population under 25 years old; this provides a major demographic advantage which could provide economic development opportunities for the country in future years. Despite this youthful demographic, there remains significant disparities between urban and rural populations; those living in urban areas tend to be more educated with higher incomes than those living in rural areas who often face greater economic hardship due to limited access to resources and opportunities for growth.
