According to allcitypopulation, Iran is a country located in the Middle East and is home to a population of approximately 81 million people. It has a diverse mix of ethnicities with the majority being Persian. Other major ethnic groups include Azeri, Gilaki, Mazandarani, Kurdish, Luri, Arab, Balochi and Turkmen. The population is also comprised of religious minorities such as Armenians, Jews and Zoroastrians. The literacy rate in Iran is high at nearly 93%, which is higher than the global average. Education is compulsory and free up to the age of 18 for both boys and girls. The majority of Iranians are Muslims with 89% identifying as Shi’a Muslims while 9% identify as Sunni Muslims. Other religious minorities include Christians, Baha’is and Jews who make up less than 1% of the population each. The official language spoken in Iran is Persian but there are several other languages spoken within its borders including Turkish, Kurdish, Arabic and Balochi among others. The economy of Iran is primarily based on oil production which accounts for nearly 80% of its exports and contributes to over half its government revenue. Other key industries include petrochemicals, textiles, automotive manufacturing and pharmaceuticals which contribute significantly to its GDP growth rate.
