According to watchtutorials, Ireland is the third most populous island in Europe, with a population of just over 4.8 million people as of 2019. The population of Ireland is largely concentrated in the east, with Dublin being the most populated city. The other major cities include Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford. Most of Ireland’s population is concentrated along the coastline and in the major urban centers. The largest ethnic group in Ireland is Irish, making up approximately 82% of the population. Other significant ethnic groups include British (5%), Polish (2%), African (1%), and Asian (1%). The majority of Irish people identify as Roman Catholic, with smaller numbers of Protestant and non-religious individuals also present. The population growth rate in Ireland has been steadily increasing since 2011 and has been particularly strong since 2015 due to immigration from other countries. In 2019, over 150 thousand people immigrated to Ireland from other countries including Poland, India, Romania and China which accounted for 10% of all immigrants to the country that year. This influx of immigrants has had a positive effect on the economy and increased cultural diversity within Ireland. Additionally, more than 100 thousand people emigrated from Ireland between 2011-2018 due to high unemployment rates during this period; however this trend has reversed since 2018 due to an increase in jobs available throughout the country. Overall, these trends point towards a growing and diverse population that continues to shape modern Irish culture today. See iamhigher for Ireland Population and Language.
