The majority of the population is concentrated in the south and along the coast, while the northern regions are sparsely populated. The population is primarily composed of Akan and Voltaic people, with smaller minorities of Krous and Mande peoples. The official language is French, although there are many regional languages such as Baoulé, Dioula and Sénoufou spoken throughout the country. The main religion is Islam, with Christianity also practiced by a significant portion of the population. Education is highly valued in Ivory Coast, with literacy rates reaching nearly 90%. Many Ivorians have left to pursue economic opportunities abroad, particularly in Europe and North America. This has caused a brain drain in certain sectors of the economy and has put an extra strain on resources.
