According to watchtutorials, Japan’s population as of October 2020 is estimated to be 126,476,461, making it the 10th most populous country in the world. The population density of Japan is 336 people per square kilometer, making it one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The majority of Japan’s population is concentrated in urban areas and its three largest cities—Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka—are among the largest cities in the world. Japan’s population has been steadily declining since 2008 due to a low birth rate and an aging population. In 2020, approximately 27 percent of Japan’s population was over 65 years old while only 13 percent was under 15 years old. In addition to this demographic shift, a significant number of foreign nationals are living and working in Japan; as of 2019 there were 2.9 million foreign nationals living in Japan. These foreign nationals come from a variety of countries including China, Korea, Vietnam and Brazil among others. This influx has helped to offset some of the population decline caused by low birth rates and an aging population. Despite these challenges, with its highly educated workforce and advanced infrastructure Japan remains one of the wealthiest countries in Asia with a strong economy driven by high-tech industry and exports.
