The county was organized in 1873 and named after Commodore Stephen Decatur, a naval hero during the War of 1812. Decatur County is bordered by Norton County to the north, Rawlins County to the east, Graham County to the south, and Sherman County to the west. The area of Decatur County was first inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Sioux and Pawnee. In 1854, a group of settlers from Ohio led by Colonel W.F.M. Arny established Oberlin as the first settlement in what would become Decatur County. The settlement quickly grew and became a bustling town with stores, saloons, hotels, churches and more. In 1873, Decatur County was officially formed from parts of Sheridan and Norton counties with Oberlin becoming its county seat. As settlers moved into Decatur County they began establishing farms which helped drive the local economy forward. By 1880 there were nearly 400 people living in Decatur county and this number had grown to almost 1,400 by 1890. Agriculture has always been an important part of life in Decatur County as it is still today with corn being one of its main crops along with soybeans and wheat. Other industries such as oil production have also contributed to its economic growth over time as well as tourism which has become increasingly popular due to nearby attractions such as Cedar Bluff State Park which offers camping, fishing and boating activities for visitors to enjoy year-round. Decatur county also boasts numerous historic sites including Fort Fletcher State Historic Site which commemorates an important military outpost that was established during the Civil War period; Oberlin Depot Museum which houses artifacts from early settlers; Oberlin Roundhouse Museum which showcases railroad history; Pioneer Cemetery which dates back to 1886; as well as multiple other museums scattered throughout the county that offer insight into its unique past.
