The county was named for Revolutionary War hero Richard Carlisle and was formed from parts of Hickman and Fulton counties. The county seat is Bardwell, Kentucky and the population of Carlisle County is 5,184 as of 2018. The first settlers arrived in Carlisle County in the early 19th century. Many were farmers who chose to settle near creeks which provided easy access to water for their crops. By the mid-1800s, agriculture was flourishing in the area with cotton being a major crop as well as corn, wheat, oats and hay. In addition to farming, Carlisle County also had many small businesses such as sawmills and grist mills that provided goods and services to its local population. In 1876 a railroad line was built through Carlisle County which helped spur growth in the area. This allowed for increased trade between towns and cities throughout Kentucky as well as across state lines into Tennessee and Missouri. The railroad also led to an increase in tourism which helped boost Carlisle County’s economy even further. As time went on, more industries began to move into Carlisle County including coal mining which became a major employer during this period. The coal industry experienced an economic boom until the 1950s when it began to decline due to competition from other sources of energy such as oil and natural gas. However, despite this downturn coal mining continued to be an important industry in Carlisle County until its closure in 1980 when all mines were shut down due to safety concerns related to underground fires burning beneath them. In recent years, Carlisle County has made efforts towards diversifying its economy with new businesses such as retail stores, restaurants, hotels and manufacturing plants moving into the area providing jobs for local residents. It also continues to be a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and camping due its abundance of natural resources including Lake Barkley State Park located nearby along with several other local parks providing ample recreational opportunities for visitors year-round.
