According to watchtutorials, Kenya is a diverse country, with a population of around 49 million people. The majority of the population is of African descent, with the largest ethnic group being the Kikuyu at 22%. They are followed by the Luhya, Luo, Kalenjin, Kamba, Kisii and Meru. There are also small groups of Asians and Europeans in the country. The official language is Swahili but English is widely spoken as well. Christianity is the predominant religion in Kenya but there are also adherents to traditional African religions and Islam. The population of Kenya has grown rapidly over recent decades due to increased birth rates and decreased mortality rates; however, it still remains relatively low compared to neighboring countries. The average life expectancy for Kenyans is currently at 59 years old and fertility rate stands at 2.6 children per woman. Poverty remains an issue for many Kenyans with over 45% living below the poverty line according to a 2015 report from UNICEF. In order to combat poverty and improve living standards for all Kenyans, the government has implemented numerous initiatives such as free primary education and subsidies for farmers. Despite these efforts there are still large disparities between rural and urban areas in terms of access to healthcare, education and other services which remain an issue that needs to be addressed if Kenya’s population is to reach its full potential.
