Kosovo is a small country located in the Balkan region of Europe, bordered by Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and Macedonia. According to the World Bank, Kosovo had a population of 1.8 million in 2019. The majority of the population are ethnic Albanians (92%), with minorities including Serbs (5%), Bosniaks (1%) and others (2%). The official language of Kosovo is Albanian, although Serbian is also spoken by many people in Kosovo. Kosovo has a very young population with over half (54%) being under the age of 25. This is partly due to high fertility rates, as well as high levels of immigration from other countries in the region such as Albania and Montenegro. The median age for Kosovo is 28 years old. The life expectancy at birth for men is 72 years and 78 years for women, which is lower than that of other countries in Europe but has been increasing over recent years due to improvements in health care services. Kosovo has a relatively low rate of urbanization compared to other countries in Europe; only 39% live in urban areas while 61% live in rural areas. The largest city is Pristina with an estimated population of 200 000 people, followed by Prizren with around 100 000 people. Other major cities include Gjakova and Peja which both have populations around 50 000 people each.
