According to watchtutorials, Laos is a small landlocked country located in Southeast Asia, with a population of just over 6.8 million people. The majority of the population is made up of ethnic Lao, who make up around 60 percent of the total population. Other ethnic groups include Hmong, Khmu, Tai Lue, and various tribal minorities. The official language of Laos is Lao, although French and English are also spoken by many people in the country. The majority of Laotians are Theravada Buddhists and practice traditional animistic beliefs as well. The population density in Laos is relatively low compared to other countries in Southeast Asia at around 37 people per square kilometer. Most of the population lives along the Mekong River and its tributaries, with about two-thirds living in rural areas. In recent years there has been some migration from rural areas to cities such as Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Savannakhet as economic opportunities become more available. Health care services are limited in rural areas with access to basic health care services being provided through village clinics or mobile health teams supported by international aid agencies. Education services have improved significantly over recent years with an increasing number of students graduating from high school each year and more universities providing higher education opportunities for those seeking them.
