It is the largest of the three Baltic countries and has a population density of 45 people per square kilometer, making it one of the least densely populated countries in Europe. The majority of Lithuania’s population are ethnic Lithuanians who make up 84.1% of the population while Poles, Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians make up 5.8%, 6.6%, 1.2% and 1.1% respectively. Lithuanian is the official language spoken by most citizens followed by Russian and Polish as second languages spoken by many minority groups living in Lithuania. The median age in Lithuania is 41 years old with a birth rate of 10 births per 1000 people and a death rate of 11 deaths per 1000 people, resulting in a negative population growth rate which has decreased from -0.3% to -0.4%. The majority of Lithuania’s population live in urban areas such as Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda with over half (52%) living in cities located within 200 km from Vilnius where most government institutions are located as well as many educational and cultural institutions and businesses providing economic opportunities for its citizens. Lithuania also has a significant diaspora with an estimated 800,000 Lithuanian nationals living abroad mainly concentrated in the United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Canada and Germany due to wars or political unrest during different periods over its history resulting in mass migration out of Lithuania to other countries around the world seeking better economic opportunities or fleeing persecution or war-torn countries during World War II or Soviet Union occupation afterwards leading to an exodus outwards from Lithuania until independence was restored after 1991 when emigration numbers started to decrease significantly again since then.
