According to top-mba-universities, Evangeline Parish, located in central Louisiana, has a rich history of agricultural and cultural development. The parish was officially established in 1910 and is named after the heroine of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie. The parish is bordered by the Calcasieu River to the east and the Sabine River to the west, providing access to both the Gulf of Mexico and several major waterways. The earliest inhabitants of Evangeline Parish were Native Americans who lived in small villages along the rivers. French explorers also traveled through Evangeline Parish during the early 1700s, but it wasn’t until after Spain gained control of Louisiana in 1763 that European settlers began to arrive in large numbers. These settlers quickly established small farms and plantations, growing cotton, corn, sugarcane, and other crops for export. By 1810, many of these settlers had become wealthy landowners and merchants. In addition to its agricultural success, Evangeline Parish also developed a vibrant cultural life during this period. This included music festivals featuring traditional Cajun bands as well as French-language theater productions at local theaters throughout the parish. During this time period, Evangeline Parish also became home to several prominent authors including Kate Chopin and Lafcadio Hearn who wrote extensively about their experiences living in rural Louisiana during this era. Evangeline Parish continued its agricultural success into the 20th century with various crops such as soybeans being grown for export across the United States. In recent years however much of Evangeline’s economy has shifted towards tourism with its beautiful bayous and historic sites attracting visitors from around the world. This includes stops along Louisiana’s Creole Nature Trail which showcases some of the state’s most spectacular natural beauty while providing an opportunity for visitors to learn more about Cajun culture and history through interactive exhibits at area museums or by attending local festivals such as Gueydan Duck Festival or Rayne Frog Festival which celebrate traditional Cajun culture through music, food activities & more. In addition, the board has implemented numerous initiatives to support student success such as increasing access to technology in the classroom, expanding after-school programs, and launching an initiative to reduce bullying in the district. Along with its public school system, Evangeline Parish also boasts several private schools that provide students with additional educational opportunities. These include St. Paul’s Catholic School which offers grades pre-K through 8th grade; Ville Platte Christian Academy which serves grades K-12; and Ville Platte Academy of Learning which provides grades K-12 with an emphasis on classical Christian education. In addition to its public and private schools, Evangeline Parish also provides access to higher education through South Louisiana Community College (SLCC). SLCC has campuses located throughout the parish including in Ville Platte where it offers associate degrees in areas such as business administration and computer information systems as well as offering continuing education courses for adults seeking additional skills or certification. Overall, the school district of Evangeline Parish strives to provide its students with a quality educational experience that prepares them for success both inside and outside of the classroom.
