It is located southwest of India and Sri Lanka, between the Arabian Sea and the Laccadive Sea. The population of Maldives was estimated to be 531,000 in 2020. The population has been steadily increasing over the past few decades, with an average annual growth rate of 1.7%. The majority of the population is concentrated in the capital city Male and its surrounding islands, which account for about 65% of the total population. The rest of the population is spread out across other islands in Maldives. The ethnic composition of Maldives is predominantly Dhivehi-speaking people who are Sunni Muslims by faith. Although there are a few expatriates living in Maldives, they make up a small portion of the population. The official language is Dhivehi which is spoken by almost all citizens while English is also widely spoken among tourists and expatriates. Maldivians have a strong sense of national identity which has been preserved due to its geographic isolation from other countries as well as its homogenous ethnic composition. This national identity has been further strengthened by Islam as it remains an integral part of everyday life for most citizens; however there are no restrictions on religious freedom or practice for non-Muslims living in Maldives. Education levels have improved significantly over recent years with literacy rates now reaching nearly 100%. Healthcare services are also improving with government initiatives to provide accessible healthcare services throughout all islands in Maldives.
