The population is predominantly young; the median age is 18 years old. The country has a high fertility rate, with an average of 5.3 children per woman, and a total fertility rate of 6.5 children per woman in rural areas. The population growth rate stands at 2.9% annually. The majority of Malians are Muslim (90%), while 8% are Christian and 2% adhere to traditional beliefs and practices. The vast majority of Malians reside in rural areas (80%), while only 20% live in urban centers. The largest cities are Bamako (the capital), Mopti, Ségou, Gao, Kayes, Sikasso and Koutiala. In terms of ethnicity, the majority of Malians are Bambara (35%) followed by Fula (17%), Songhai (12%), Tuareg and Moorish (10%) and Senufo (6%). There is also a large expatriate community from other West African countries such as Guinea, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso living in Mali’s urban centers due to economic opportunities present there. Education levels are generally low; only 22% of the population has had any formal schooling beyond primary level education.
