According to top-mba-universities, Talbot County was founded in 1662 and is one of the oldest counties in Maryland. It is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and is bordered by Dorchester, Caroline, Queen Anne’s, Kent, and Talbot Counties. The county was named after Lady Grace Talbot, the daughter of Cecilius Calvert, Second Lord Baltimore. The first European settlers in Talbot County were English colonists who arrived in the early 1600s. They established several small settlements along the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. During this time, tobacco was the main crop grown by these settlers. As tobacco farming declined in importance during the late 1700s and early 1800s, many farmers turned to other crops such as wheat and corn or began raising livestock instead. The town of Easton became an important commercial center for Talbot County during this period as it had easy access to both Baltimore and Philadelphia via sailing vessels traveling up the Chesapeake Bay. By 1820 there were over 2,000 residents living in Easton making it one of the largest towns on Maryland’s Eastern Shore at that time. In addition to being a major commercial center for Talbot County during this period, Easton also served as a major cultural center with several newspapers being published there including The Easton Star and The Easton Gazette which were two of the oldest newspapers published on Maryland’s Eastern Shore at that time.
