According to top-mba-universities, Franklin County, Massachusetts is located in the northwest corner of the state and is home to many small towns and rural areas. The county was first established in 1811 from parts of Hampshire and Berkshire counties. It was named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The county has a rich history that dates back to before the Revolutionary War. During colonial times, Franklin County was an agricultural center and was known for its apple orchards and dairy farms. In 1786, the first cotton mill in Massachusetts opened in Shelburne Falls which helped to propel industrialization in the region. The area also became a major center for papermaking during this time period with several mills operating throughout Franklin County. In addition to agriculture and industry, the county also saw an influx of immigrants who came to work on these mills and farms during this time period. The 19th century brought more growth to Franklin County with many new businesses opening up including shoe factories, furniture factories, knitting mills, tanneries, and machine shops. In 1876, Amherst College opened its doors which marked a major milestone for higher education in the region. During this time period several railroads were built through Franklin County as well as trolley lines which helped to connect nearby cities such as Boston and Springfield with towns throughout the county. In recent years, Franklin County has become increasingly popular for tourists who come for its natural beauty including Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation which offers spectacular views of New England countryside along with plenty of hiking trails and outdoor activities. The area also boasts many historical sites including Old Deerfield Village which allows visitors to explore life during colonial times as well as several museums dedicated to local history such as The Museum of Our Industrial Heritage located in Greenfield which showcases local industry from early times through modern day production methods. Franklin County, Massachusetts is home to some of the best school districts in the state. The region is served by four public school districts: Amherst-Pelham Regional School District, Athol-Royalston Regional School District, Frontier Regional School District and Mohawk Trail Regional School District. All four of these school districts are highly rated and offer comprehensive educational programs for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Amherst-Pelham Regional School District serves students from the towns of Amherst, Pelham, Leverett, Shutesbury, and New Salem. The district consists of five elementary schools – Wildwood Elementary School in Amherst, Crocker Farm Elementary School in Amherst, Fort River Elementary in Amherst, Pelham Elementary School in Pelham, and Swift River Elementary in New Salem – a middle school and a high school located in Amherst. The district offers a wide range of educational opportunities including Advanced Placement (AP) courses and dual enrollment with local colleges. The Athol-Royalston Regional School District serves students from the towns of Athol and Royalston. The district consists of two elementary schools – Athol-Royalston Middle/High Complex in Athol and Royalston Community Elementary/Middle School in Royalston – as well as an Early Childhood Center located at the Middle/High Complex. Students have access to a variety of extracurricular activities such as sports teams, music groups, theater productions and art classes. The Frontier Regional School District serves students from the towns of Deerfield, Sunderland, Whately and Conway. The district consists of one elementary school – Frontier Regional Middle/High Complex – which houses both middle and high school grades as well as an Early Childhood Center located at the same complex. Students have access to a variety of extracurricular activities including sports teams such as football and basketball as well as clubs like chess club or robotics club. Finally, the Mohawk Trail Regional School District serves students from Ashfield, Buckland, Charlemont, Colrain, Hawley, Heath, and Rowe. The district consists of two elementary schools – Mohawk Trail Regional Middle/High Complex in Shelburne Falls and Hawlemont Regional Elementary School in Charlemont – as well as an Early Childhood Center located at the same complex. The district offers a wide range of educational opportunities including Advanced Placement (AP) courses, dual enrollment with local colleges and access to a variety of extracurricular activities such as sports teams and clubs.
