According to watchtutorials, Mauritania is a country located in North West Africa, with a population of approximately 4.6 million. The population is largely composed of two main ethnic groups: the Arab-Berber, who constitute over 80% of the population and the sub-Saharan Africans who make up about 19%. The remainder are made up of various other ethnicities such as Europeans, South Asians and some others. The official language is Arabic, but French and other African languages are also commonly spoken. The majority of the population resides in rural areas and is heavily reliant on subsistence agriculture for their livelihoods. This has resulted in high levels of poverty across the country, with almost half of Mauritania’s population living below the poverty line. In addition to this, there is also a large gender gap in terms of educational attainment that exists between men and women in Mauritania; only 25% of women have completed secondary school education compared to 75% for men. The median age in Mauritania is 20 years old, and nearly 40% of the population is aged 14 or under; this suggests that there will be an increasing demand for social services as well as jobs for young people over the coming years. In terms of health care, life expectancy has increased from around 50 years old in 1990 to 64 years old today; however there remain significant health disparities between urban and rural areas due to inadequate access to quality health services throughout much of Mauritania.
