It has a population of 1.3 million people and is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The population is ethnically diverse, with Indo-Mauritians making up 68% of the population, followed by Creole (27%), Sino-Mauritians (3%), and other minorities (2%). The majority of Mauritians are Hindu, followed by Christians and Muslims. English is the official language of Mauritius, but French and Creole are also widely spoken. Education is highly valued in Mauritius, with nearly 100% literacy rate among adults. Life expectancy for men and women in Mauritius is 78 years and 82 years respectively. The economy of Mauritius has been growing steadily since independence in 1968. Tourism, financial services, manufacturing, IT services, agriculture and fisheries are some of the major contributors to its economy. The main exports are clothing and textiles, sugarcane products, seafood, chemicals and light industrial goods such as electronics components. The government has been actively investing in infrastructure development to attract foreign investments which have led to an increase in economic growth over the past few decades. As a result, poverty levels have decreased significantly with over 90% of households having access to basic services such as electricity and water supply.
