As of July 2020, the population of Moldova was estimated to be 3.55 million people. The majority of Moldovans are of Romanian ethnicity (78%) while the rest are made up of ethnic minorities such as Ukrainians (8%), Russians (6%), Gagauz (4%), Bulgarians (1%) and other ethnic minorities making up the remaining 3%. The population density in Moldova is one of the highest in Europe at an estimated 153 people per square kilometer. This high population density is due to its relatively small size, with a total area of 33,843 square kilometers. The capital city of Chisinau is also the largest city in Moldova with an estimated population of 790,000 people. Other major cities include Tiraspol with a population of 164,000 people and Balti with a population of 120,000 people. The majority of Moldovans live in rural areas with about 51% living in towns and villages as opposed to 49% living in urban areas such as Chisinau or other major cities. The life expectancy for males is approximately 67 years while for females it is 73 years on average. In terms of religion, around 95% are Orthodox Christians while 5% adhere to other religions such as Catholicism or Judaism. The official language spoken by most citizens is Romanian but Russian and Ukrainian are also widely spoken throughout Moldova due to its proximity to these two countries.
