According to watchtutorials, Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a country located in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand. The population of Myanmar is estimated to be 53 million people in 2018. The majority of the population is made up of the Bamar ethnic group which makes up 68% of the population. The Shan ethnic group makes up 9% while other ethnic minorities such as the Karen (7%), Rakhine (4%) and Chinese (3%) also make up a significant portion of Myanmar’s population. The majority of Myanmar’s population lives in rural areas with around 75% living in villages and small towns. Yangon, the country’s largest city, has a population of over 7 million people according to 2015 estimates and serves as the commercial hub for the region. Other major cities include Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw and Bago which have populations ranging from 500 thousand to 1 million people respectively. The literacy rate in Myanmar is estimated to be around 90% however there are still disparities between rural and urban areas with some regions having lower literacy rates than others. Additionally, women’s literacy rates tend to be lower than men’s with some estimates putting them at around 83%. The life expectancy rate for both men and women in Myanmar stands at around 65 years old according to 2017 estimates while infant mortality rate stands at 30 per 1 thousand births. Additionally, Myanmar’s fertility rate stands at 2 children per woman which is slightly below replacement level fertility rate indicating that it is likely that its population will start shrinking over time due to low fertility rates combined with an aging population.
