The majority of Nepal’s population is Hindu, and Hinduism is the official religion. Other religions practiced in Nepal are Buddhism, Islam, Kirat and Christianity. The people of Nepal are highly diverse; the ethnic Nepalese make up about two-thirds of the population, while other ethnic groups include Tibeto-Burman, Indo-Aryan and various indigenous peoples. The official language of Nepal is Nepali, but many other languages are spoken throughout the country as well. English is also widely spoken as a second language among educated individuals. Nepal has one of the youngest populations in the world; over half of its population is under 25 years old. This has put immense pressure on resources such as education and health care services due to its rapid growth rate. Despite this challenge, Nepal has achieved remarkable progress in terms of reducing poverty levels; since 1990, poverty has decreased by more than 40%.
