The population density is 518 people per square kilometer, making it one of the most densely populated countries in Europe. The country has a strong immigration policy and nearly a quarter of the population are immigrants or their descendants. In recent years, the Netherlands has seen an influx of asylum seekers, mainly from Syria and Afghanistan. The largest ethnic group in the Netherlands is Dutch, accounting for 80% of the population. Other significant ethnic groups include Moroccans (4%), Turks (2%) and Indonesians (1%). The Netherlands has a high life expectancy rate of 81 years for men and 84 years for women and a low infant mortality rate at 4 per 1,000 live births. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic (30%), followed by Protestantism (16%) and Islam (5%).
