It was established in 1899 and named after the Spanish word for “eagle.” Otero County has a rich history that spans centuries and includes Native American tribes, Spanish explorers, and American settlers. The first inhabitants of the area were the Mescalero Apache and Comanche tribes who lived in this area long before Europeans arrived. In 1598, Spanish explorer Juan de Onate became the first European to explore this region. He established several settlements, including one near present-day Alamogordo, which served as a trading post between Native Americans and Europeans. In 1854, American settlers began arriving in Otero County and by 1855 it was officially recognized as part of New Mexico Territory. Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, settlers continued to move into the area seeking new opportunities for ranching, farming, mining, and other activities. During World War II Otero County was an important center for military training due to its close proximity to White Sands Missile Range. After the war ended many soldiers stayed in Otero County permanently leading to an influx of new residents. Today, Otero County is home to over 60 thousand people making it one of the most populous counties in New Mexico. It offers visitors a wide variety of attractions including White Sands National Park, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, historic sites such as Fort Stanton Historic Site & Museum and Apache Point Observatory as well as numerous outdoor activities like camping, fishing, hunting and hiking. Otero County, New Mexico is served by four public school districts, the Alamogordo Public Schools (APS), Cloudcroft Municipal Schools (CMS), La Luz Public Schools (LLPS), and Tularosa Municipal Schools (TMS). These districts provide educational opportunities for students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Alamogordo Public Schools district is the largest in Otero County, serving over 6,000 students from elementary to high school. It encompasses nine elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. APS also provides additional educational services such as special education programs, a career and technical education center and alternative education programs. The Cloudcroft Municipal School District serves around 500 students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. It consists of one elementary school and one middle school as well as a variety of extracurricular activities including sports, music and theater. The La Luz Public School District serves around 400 students in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It has one elementary school and one middle school that offer a variety of extracurricular activities such as band, choir and robotics clubs. Finally, the Tularosa Municipal School District serves around 1,000 students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. It includes an elementary school, middle school and high school with a full range of academic courses including Advanced Placement classes as well as extracurricular activities such as sports teams and clubs. All four of these public school districts strive to provide quality educational opportunities for their students while also offering a variety of extracurricular activities for them to get involved in outside of the classroom setting. They all have strong community support which helps ensure that their learning environments remain safe and welcoming places for all students to learn and grow academically.
