According to watchtutorials, Niger is a West African country located in the Sahara Desert. It has a population of approximately 21.5 million people, making it the seventh most populous nation in Africa. The majority of the population is comprised of people from the Hausa, Fulani, and Tuareg ethnic groups, with smaller numbers from other ethnic backgrounds such as Kanuri, Gurma, Songhai, Toubou, and Zarma. The official language is French but Hausa and other local languages are also spoken. The majority of the population is Muslim, with about 80 percent practicing Sunni Islam. Christianity is also practiced by a small percentage of Nigeriens. In terms of education level, only about 25 percent of Nigeriens have had some sort of formal education beyond primary school. This figure rises to nearly 40 percent for those aged 15-24 years old. Poverty remains a major issue in Niger with over half the population living below the poverty line according to World Bank estimates from 2017. In addition to poverty levels being high, access to basic services such as clean water and health care remain low in many parts of the country due to inadequate infrastructure and resources. Despite these issues however there are encouraging signs that Nigerien society is slowly improving with increased access to education and healthcare services helping to alleviate poverty levels across the nation.
