According to top-mba-universities, Griggs County was established in 1881, and was named after Alexander Griggs, who served as a delegate to the Dakota Territory legislature. The county is located in the southeastern corner of North Dakota, and is bordered by Steele, Barnes, Foster, and Eddy counties. The first settlers came to the area in 1879 and founded several towns, including Cooperstown and Binford. Agriculture has been an important industry in Griggs County since its founding. Wheat has been the primary crop grown in the county since the 1880s. Other crops grown include corn, oats, barley, flaxseed and soybeans. Livestock production is also important to the agricultural economy of Griggs County. In addition to agriculture, other industries have developed over time including manufacturing and retail businesses. Throughout its history Griggs County has been home to many different ethnic groups including German-Russians, Native Americans (primarily Sioux), Norwegians and Swedes. The county’s population peaked in 1930 at 15,973 people before declining steadily over the next few decades due to out-migration from rural areas across North Dakota during this period of time. Today, Griggs County’s population stands at just under 3200 people as of 2020 census estimates. Despite its small size Griggs County maintains a strong sense of community with events such as their annual county fair held every summer since 1895 which attracts visitors from all over North Dakota and surrounding states. Griggs County is served by two school districts: the Cooperstown Public School District and the Central Valley Public School District. The Cooperstown Public School District serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade, and has an enrollment of approximately 800 students. The district operates four schools: Cooperstown Elementary, Cooperstown Middle School, Cooperstown High School, and a preschool program.
