According to top-mba-universities, Custer County, Oklahoma is located in the western part of the state and is named after General George Armstrong Custer, a Civil War veteran who was killed in the Battle of Little Big Horn. The area that would become Custer County was originally part of a larger area called Greer County, which was created in 1876. In 1896, Greer County was divided into two parts, with the larger portion becoming Roger Mills County and the smaller portion becoming Custer County. The first settlers to the area were ranchers and cowboys who brought their livestock to graze on the open grasslands. The land quickly became popular for its abundance of natural resources such as timber and minerals. As more settlers arrived, small towns began to form and businesses started to spring up throughout the county. By 1910, Custer County had a population of 7,700 people living in eleven towns. In 1916, oil was discovered in Custer County which caused an economic boom as more people moved into the area to take advantage of new job opportunities. This led to further development as more businesses opened up throughout the county and transportation infrastructure improved with new roads being built connecting towns within Custer County as well as connecting it with other nearby counties. Today, Custer County has a population of approximately 28 thousand people spread out among eleven townships including Arapahoe, Butler, Clinton, Cordell, Fossil Ridge, Gageby Creek Valley, Lone Wolf Creek Valley, Lower Washita River Valley North Fork Red River Valley South Fork Red River Valley and Weatherford Township. The county offers its residents a variety of recreational activities from camping at Fossil Ridge Park or fishing at Lake Altus-Lugert to riding horses at Hidden Trails Stables or visiting one of many museums such as Museum of Western Oklahoma History or Cordell Museum Complex. The Custer County School District is comprised of nine schools located in various towns throughout the county. These include five elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school and one alternative school. The district also includes a variety of specialized programs such as a Gifted and Talented program, an English as a Second Language program and an Early Childhood Education program. All of the schools in the district are dedicated to providing students with a quality education that prepares them for college or future careers. The district has highly qualified teachers and administrators who are committed to helping each student reach their academic potential. In addition to the traditional academic classes, students can also take part in extracurricular activities such as sports teams, music programs and after-school clubs.
