The majority of the population is Arab, with a small percentage of non-Arab minorities. The official language is Arabic and the currency is the Omani Rial. Oman has a young population, with over half of its citizens under the age of 25. Education is highly valued in Oman, with around 95% literacy rate among adults. The largest city in Oman is Muscat, which serves as its capital and has an estimated population of 1.4 million people. It’s home to around 40% of the country’s total population, making it one of the most populous cities in the region. Muscat also serves as an important cultural center for the country, hosting numerous festivals throughout the year that celebrate traditional music and dance from various cultures found within Oman’s borders. Outside of Muscat, other major cities in Oman include Salalah, Sohar and Nizwa which all have populations ranging from 100 thousand to 500 thousand people each. Additionally, many smaller towns are scattered throughout the landscape that are home to some of Oman’s more rural communities such as Bedouin tribes and fishing villages along its coastlines. Overall, Oman boasts a diverse mix of cultures that are reflective both its Middle Eastern roots as well as influences from India and Africa that have been brought into the country through trade routes since ancient times. This combination has resulted in a unique culture that makes up much of what makes up modern day Omani society today. See localtimezone for Oman Population and Language.
