The majority of the population is concentrated in the coastal area, with a large section living in Lima, the capital city. The population density is higher in urban areas compared to rural areas. The ethnic composition of Peru’s population is diverse, with Amerindians making up around 45% of the total population. Mestizos, who are a mix of Amerindian and European heritage, make up 37% of the population. Europeans make up about 15%, and Afro-Peruvians and Asians make up about 3% each. The official language spoken in Peru is Spanish, although many indigenous languages are also widely spoken throughout the country. Quechua and Aymara are two widely spoken indigenous languages that are recognized by the government as official languages alongside Spanish.
