According to top-mba-universities, Washington County, Rhode Island is a small county located in the southwestern corner of the state. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Connecticut to the west. The county was established in 1729 and was one of the five original counties in Rhode Island. It was named for George Washington, who had recently been elected as President of the United States. The economy in Washington County was largely agricultural for much of its history, with dairy farming being a major industry. The area also has a long maritime history, with many ships sailing from ports such as Wickford and Point Judith. During colonial times, Washington County played an important role in supplying goods to other colonies and even to foreign countries. In 1776, Washington County saw its first military action when British forces invaded Rhode Island during the Revolutionary War. The county saw several battles between American and British forces before ultimately being liberated by French forces under Rochambeau’s command in 1781. Washington County has also played an important role in American industrial history due to its proximity to Providence and Newport. In 1803, Samuel Slater established his first cotton mill in nearby Pawtucket and this began a period of rapid industrial growth that lasted until World War II when industry shifted away from manufacturing towards services such as banking and healthcare. Today, Washington County remains largely rural but still retains some industry such as manufacturing and fishing. It continues to be an important part of Rhode Island’s economy with tourism playing an increasingly significant role due to its scenic beauty along with attractions such as historic houses and lighthouses. Washington County is known for its friendly people, beautiful scenery, rich history, and quaint small towns that have managed to remain largely unchanged since colonial times. Despite its small size it has made an enormous impact on both Rhode Island’s culture and economy over the centuries making it a truly unique place that should not be overlooked. Washington County is served by several school districts, including the Chariho Regional School District, which includes the towns of Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton.
