The majority of the population is of African descent, with East Indians and Europeans making up a smaller portion. The official language of Saint Lucia is English, but a French patois is also spoken by many people. Saint Lucia has an ethnically diverse population with people from various cultures and backgrounds. The largest ethnic group are the Afro-Caribbean people who make up approximately 75% of the population. This group includes descendants from African slaves brought over to work on the sugar plantations during colonial times as well as migrants from other Caribbean islands who moved to Saint Lucia in search of better opportunities and a better life. East Indians make up around 15% of the population and are mainly descended from indentured laborers who were brought over to work on the plantations during British rule.
