According to watchtutorials, São Tomé and Principe is an island nation located in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western coast of Central Africa. It is the smallest country in Africa, with a population of approximately 203,000 people. The population is primarily composed of mestiços, or people of mixed African and Portuguese descent. This population is largely concentrated on São Tomé Island, which has a population density of roughly 290 people per square kilometer. The remaining population lives on Principe Island and other nearby islands. The official language of São Tomé and Principe is Portuguese, although many locals also speak Forro, an Angolan-based creole language that has become increasingly popular among younger generations. English is also widely spoken among the educated elite, particularly in the larger cities such as São Tomé City and Santana. Christianity is the predominant religion in São Tomé and Principe; however there are small communities of Muslims and followers of traditional African religions as well. The economy of São Tomé and Principe relies heavily on tourism as well as exports like cocoa, copra (dried coconut), palm kernels, fish products, bananas, timber products and spices such as pepper and cloves. The nation also produces its own sugar from sugar cane plantations located on both islands. Other industries include construction materials production (cement), textiles manufacturing (mostly clothing) and beverages (rum). Additionally, fishing remains an important economic activity for many coastal communities throughout the islands. See ejinhua for Sao Tome and Principe Population and Language.
