The population is also diverse in terms of religion with a majority being Muslim or Christian. The literacy rate in Sierra Leone is around 43%, with a higher rate amongst males than females. Education is a major concern in Sierra Leone, as there are limited resources available to support it. Health care faces similar challenges with limited access to clean water and sanitation services available to much of the population. Despite these challenges, Sierra Leone has seen some positive changes in recent years. Since the end of the civil war in 2002, there has been an increase in economic growth and development which has helped reduce poverty levels and improve living standards for many people living there. Life expectancy for males and females has increased from 47 years to 53 years respectively since 2000, which reflects improved access to health care services over this time period. Additionally, the country has seen an increase in access to education opportunities for both boys and girls since 2002 due to government initiatives such as free primary schooling for all children aged 6-15 years old.
