According to allcitypopulation, Sri Lanka is a small island nation located off the southern coast of India. It has a population of approximately 21 million people. The population is highly diverse and consists of many ethnic and religious groups. The majority of the population are Sinhalese, who make up 74% of the total population. They speak Sinhala, an Indo-Aryan language, as their native language. Tamils, who make up 18% of the population, are the largest minority group and speak Tamil as their native language. Muslims make up 7% of the population and mostly live in the eastern and northern parts of Sri Lanka. Other minor ethnic groups include Burghers, Malays, Moors and Veddahs. The majority of Sri Lankans are Buddhist (70%), with Hindus (15%) being the second largest religious group in Sri Lanka followed by Muslims (7%). Christianity accounts for 6% of the population while other religions such as Jainism and animism account for less than 1%. The literacy rate in Sri Lanka is 91%, which is one of the highest among developing countries in South Asia. The median age is 30 years old with a life expectancy at birth being 74 years old for both men and women. The birth rate is 15 births/1000 people while death rate stands at 6 deaths/1000 people making it one of the fastest growing countries in South Asia with a growth rate at 1%. Overall, Sri Lanka has a diverse population that consists mainly of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and other smaller ethnic groups.
