According to allcitypopulation, Venezuela is a South American country located on the northern coast of South America, bordered by Colombia to the west, Brazil to the south, Guyana to the east and the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to the north. According to a 2020 census estimate, Venezuela has an estimated population of 28 million people. The population is made up of a diverse mix of ethnicities including mestizos (mixed European and Amerindian), Europeans, Afro-Venezuelans, Asians and indigenous peoples. The Spanish language is the official language in Venezuela and is spoken by most people in the country. English is also spoken as a second language in certain areas. The majority of Venezuelans are Roman Catholic but there are other religious groups present in smaller numbers such as Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and others. The majority of Venezuelans live in urban areas with Caracas being the largest city with a population estimated at 3 million. Other large cities include Maracaibo with 2 million people and Valencia with 1 million people. The Venezuelan economy relies heavily on oil production which accounts for 96% of exports but has seen significant decline since 2014 due to political unrest and economic mismanagement leading to hyperinflation rates higher than any other country in history. This has led to poverty levels increasing significantly with more than half of Venezuelans living below the poverty line according to 2019 estimates from UNICEF. In addition, there has been a significant increase in crime rates as well as food shortages due to government policies which have resulted in mass emigration out of Venezuela since 2017 reaching over 4 million people by 2020 according to UNHCR estimates.
